We are happy to introduce our Patient of the Month, Steve Patch. Steve is a golfer who came to us after having this third Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF).
Steve had been in pain for a long time and his struggle included getting past the fear of being in pain. “In my case, my treatment here was both physical and mental. I have had pain for so long that I just expect to hurt even though it might not be pain. Then there is the “real” physical pain that I was enduring after surgery. Orthocore was instrumental and helping me understand the difference between the two and how to tackle both issues. In reality the mental apprehension was so hard for me to overcome. I am convinced that I would not have overcome it without OrthoCore. The physical part was constant PT work. They know how to motivate you.”
Although we usually send out patient home with ‘homework’ tasks, we had to make an exception for Steve due to his injury. “I have not been given homework. OrthoCore provided me with a guide to work on areas of my physical therapy without jeopardizing or potentially putting me in a poor situation that may hinder my PT development. I like working at home without guidance on the areas I am capable of performing. It’s a smart and sensible option.”
It is understandable that when Steve first started out he had some concerns about how the treatment would feel. “On the first day of PT I was very apprehensive. I was generally scared of the pain that I thought was to follow. My improvement has be life changing. I can behave physically in ways that I haven’t been able to in over seventeen and I am almost fifty.” In addition to love of golf, Steve has been very active with other activities that he enjoys. “I am able to swim, sleep, paddleboard, sleep and be happy since I feel better! There is one thing that I have not tried yet, skiing, and there is still time for that.”
After feeling so much better, Steve wants everyone to know about his great experience. “I would tell anyone that is thinking about getting physical therapy to think about OrthoCore first! There seems to be a PT facility on every corner. There is only one OrthoCore that is focused on getting you up and running as efficiently and effectively as possible. More importantly OrthoCore brings so many new and empirically proven techniques that most places haven’t even heard of let alone implement in their practices.”
This recommendation comes because Steve has found OrthoCore to be different. “I have been to seven physical therapy practices and I wouldn’t go to the other six, if they paid me. OrthoCore understands how my body is acting and how to counteract it. I was so physically in pain that I worried that every move would create the ‘pain’. OrthoCore helped recalibrate how I thought about pain and helping me understand how to manage going about my day without pain.”
Steve says the most enjoyable part of his treatment here has been his greater understanding of his body. “I always want to know why my body is behaving the way it is. OrthoCore gives me an answer beyond ‘That’s how it behaves.’ I understand the behind the scenes issues that are going on. It really helps me focus on how to handle the physical therapy and areas to pay attention to as I move through this process. Ian is kind of cool too!”
